Who are we?

Sarah Junior School is a pre-primary school for 65 children in Kibera slum, Nairobi, funded by a UK-based charity. We also operate Rafiki orphanage for a small number of orphaned children.

The School was founded in September 2006 by British teenager Sarah Shucksmith, in partnership with a small group of Kiberan locals who teach the children and manage the school.

Sarah Junior School is a registered CBO (Community Based Organisation) in Kenya and a registered charity in the United Kingdom (charity number 1119135).

Why Kibera?

Kibera is a forgotten landscape. A sprawling human jungle of starvation, disease, suffering and political violence. A mass of desperate people migrating from the surrounding regions to find work, to be met with a land polluted by human refuse and garbage.

The Government has turned a blind eye. Almost everyone has turned a blind eye. An embarrassing disfigurement that exists partly because of Government failing and partly because of a lack of international pressure and assistance, Kibera has been left to fester.

And all this time, people struggle for their lives and their livelihoods. They labour and toil, invent and discover, they sweat and bleed, they dream and desire. Yet they are denied access to basic social rights; those of education, health, housing and work.

In 2006, as a 17 year old student about to start university in England, Sarah Shucksmith visited Kibera and encountered two teachers who were desperate to start a school that allowed the very poorest children in Kibera the opportunity of an education.

Having experiences the squalid, desperate conditions first hand, Sarah promised to help the teachers, and on her return to England began working to fulfil their dream.
